Excellence in teaching and engaging students in learning is both challenging and exciting. The Focus on Teaching Conference has traditionally provided a forum to:
  • celebrate the work of teachers in a fun, engaging, and rewarding way;
  • dialogue with colleagues from across disciplines;
  • engage in informed and constructive conversations related to the complexities of teaching and learning; and
  • share strategies and insights that increase teaching and learning effectiveness.

Student Ownership of the Course Development Process

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

In this session, participants will learn how students can be involved in the course development process as either collaborators involved in co-creation or independent developers creating entire courses with guidance from faculty and the Teaching and Learning Centre. Allowing students to take an active part in the course development process ensures that instructional materials, learning activities, and assessments are student-centred, diverse, and engaging. Students often find innovative ways to solve challenges they see in the classroom that individual faculty members may not know exist. For example, students identified overlap and gaps in a semester's programming, so they used software to 'tag' objectives and group them into similar topics that would align during the same weeks of the semester in different courses.

Session Objectives
Through participation in this session, participants will
  • identify opportunities for students to become involved in course development/revision/review
  • gather feedback from a student's own experience in the course development process
  • gain insight into the types of assessment that will better prepare students to succeed in their chosen field
  • access a checklist and templates that help guide course development.
